General Questions

What is Cause Y Not?

Cause Y Not is Ottawa's leading youth empowerment organization. We provide funding, mentorship, and professional development to young people aged 15-30 who want to lead community projects. Our model gives youth the resources and support they need to turn their ideas into real impact.

Who can participate in your programs?

Our programs are open to youth aged 15-30 from all backgrounds and experience levels. You don't need any specific qualifications or experience—just passion for making a difference in your community. All youth are welcome, regardless of socioeconomic status or background.

Where is Cause Y Not located?

We're based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. While we primarily serve the Ottawa community, our programs are designed to create positive change throughout the city.

Program & Costs

How much does it cost to participate?

It's completely free! All program costs, including training, certifications, and materials, are fully funded by Cause Y Not. We remove financial barriers to ensure all youth can access our programs regardless of their economic circumstances.

What time commitment is required?

Time commitment varies by program but typically ranges from 1-2 meetings per week over a 3-4 month cycle. We work with participants to find schedules that work around their school, work, and other commitments.

How often do programs run?

We run multiple program cycles throughout the year. New applications open regularly, so you can look for opportunities that fit your schedule. Check our website or contact us for information about upcoming program cycles.

Can I apply if I've already participated before?

Yes! Returning participants are welcome to apply for new program cycles. Many of our most impactful youth leaders participate in multiple programs to deepen their skills and expand their projects.

Projects & Funding

How much funding can I get for my project?

Projects are typically funded up to $5,000, though the exact amount depends on your project scope, needs, and budget. We work with you to determine appropriate funding that supports your vision.

What kinds of projects can I propose?

We welcome a wide range of community projects: sports and recreation programs, environmental initiatives, arts and culture projects, technology workshops, mental health awareness campaigns, social services, and more. Your project should benefit your community and align with your values.

Do I get paid to participate?

Yes! Participants receive honorariums for their involvement and leadership. The exact amount varies by program, but participants are compensated for their time and contribution. This is in addition to project funding.

Mentorship & Support

What kind of support will I receive?

Each participant is paired with a dedicated mentor who guides them through project planning, budgeting, implementation, and completion. Our team also provides ongoing support through regular check-ins, workshops, and access to our network of experienced leaders and professionals.

Who are your mentors?

Our mentors are experienced professionals, community leaders, and previous program participants. All mentors undergo background checks and training to ensure they provide high-quality, safe support to youth participants.

Can I choose my mentor?

While we consider your preferences, mentor matching is done by our team based on your goals, interests, and needs. We aim to create pairings that will be most beneficial for your development and project success.

Certifications

What certifications can I get?

We provide CPR-C certification, Mental Health First Aid training, and AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) certification. All certifications are fully funded and recognized across Canada.

Are these certifications valuable for employment?

Absolutely! These certifications are recognized by employers and organizations across Canada. They demonstrate your commitment to professional development and can boost your job prospects and resume.

Is there a cost for certifications?

No, we cover all certification costs. Training and exam fees are fully funded as part of the program.

Safety & Parents

How are projects supervised?

All projects are supervised by background-checked mentors and staff who follow clear safety protocols. We maintain appropriate supervision ratios, have emergency response procedures in place, and conduct regular check-ins with participants. We also maintain open communication with families.

Are participants insured?

Yes, all youth participants are covered under comprehensive liability and accident insurance during program activities. This protection is included at no cost to families.

Application & Getting Started

How do I apply?

Click the "Apply Now" button on our website to access the application form. The form asks about your background, community interests, and project ideas. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout program cycles.

What should I include in my application?

Tell us about yourself, your interests, and the community challenge or opportunity you'd like to address. Share your vision for a project that would make a difference. Be authentic—we're looking for passion and commitment, not perfection.

How long does the application process take?

We review applications on a rolling basis and typically notify applicants within 2-3 weeks. Selected candidates are invited to an interview where we discuss their ideas and goals.

What if I don't get selected?

We encourage you to apply again in the next program cycle. Feedback is available upon request. Many successful participants applied multiple times before being selected.
